Psalms 138:2
I will worship the temple of thy holiness and praise thy name above thy mercy and thy truth; for thou hast made thy name to be magnificent and raised up thy spoken word above all things. (Jubilee Bible)

Are you worshiping at the altar of another person’s opinion?

Have you ever said, “I don’t care what people think?” You probably wanted to mean it. However, there are some people whose opinion matters to you. There is nothing wrong with that. You want to know if there is a stain on your clothes or if there is something on your face. When it comes to finding and understanding your place in God, you seek the counsel of spiritual leaders, prayer partners, etc.

Proverbs 11:14 Where there is no [wise, intelligent] guidance, the people fall [and go off course like a ship without a helm], But in the abundance of [wise and godly] counselors there is victory.

The Bible encourages you to seek wisdom as long as you are asking for input and not for someone to tell you what to do. The biggest concern is, did you begin your search with the One who created you?

James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom [to guide him through a decision or circumstance], he is to ask of [our benevolent] God, who gives to everyone generously and without rebuke or blame, and it will be given to him. (Amplified Bible AMP)

Just remember, whomever you ask is on the same search as you, no matter what their title or position is. They can give you tools for your search; however, they can’t tell you who you are. You have to be willing to allow God to do the work in and through you.

Philippians 2:13 For it is [not your strength, but it is] God who is effectively at work in you, both to will and to work [that is, strengthening, energizing, and creating in you the longing and the ability to fulfill your purpose] for His good pleasure. (Amplified Bible AMP)

If you are not, you accept the opinion that sounds good to you and you continue to go to that source for guidance. It is dangerous for you to allow any person to have the final say so about who you are. If you do, you also give them undue influence over your life. You will want them to be pleased with you. You will make whatever changes they say you need to make and hang on their every word.

Romans 6:16a Don’t you realize that grace frees you to choose your own master? But choose carefully, for you surrender yourself to become a servant—bound to the one you choose to obey. (The Passion Translation TPT)

God knows why He created you and what your purpose is. Go to Him to find your answers.

Please agree with me as I pray:

Father, I thank You for bringing me to the place where I only worship You. It has taken me years to get the understanding I can have respect for someone without allowing them to dictate who I am. I repent for the years I spent altering Your creation to accommodate the whims of someone else. I come to You for guidance, for direction and for correction. I come to You to find out who I am, where I am going, and what I should do. I thank You for taking the time with me and for tolerating my inability to hear You clearly and accept what You say about me. I’m getting stronger every day. I am trusting You more every day. Thank You…
